The North Coast 500 Route
The Route The North Coast 500 is a 517 mile scenic route that starts and ends at Inverness Castle. Designed to bring together the best of the Northern Highlands of Scotland in one iconic touring route.
The route traditionally goes in a clockwise direction, leaving Inverness and heading west to Applecross passing through Muir of Ord, Achnasheen and Lochcarron on the way. From Applecross we then head north on dramatic single carriage roads towards the north west town of Durness. Between these two spectacular locations are uncountable numbers of hidden gems in the Scottish landscapes, such as the unspoilt Achmelvich beach or the tantalising mountain peak of Benn Eighe, to only name but a few. On arrival in Durness, a visit to the adventurous Smoo caves will also open your eyes to the natural beauty of the country.
Throughout the route there are many beautiful campsites that are fully equipped, however, with North Coast 500 Motorhomes, you have the luxury to make any stop at any time, in any stunning location across the route.
We change direction from Durness and head east along the rugged coastline of the very north of Scotland. The dramatic scenery has been carved by the sea over many thousands of years and the golden sandy beaches will rival the best in the world. The beaches are an excellent place to stop and explore, you never know you may even spot dolphins playing in the surf. The last port of call before you head South is John ‘o’ Groats, a picture by the famous sign is one for the album.
Your journey has taken the final directional turn and you are now heading South back towards Inverness, however don’t rush back and miss the castles built on stacks of rocks that rise from the sea or the quaint fishing villages where a stop to sample the freshly caught seafood is always a great idea.
The North Coast 500 will be completed when you return to Inverness Castle.
Of course we cannot describe the North Coast 500 in a few short paragraphs…the wildlife, mountains, beaches, restaurants, golf courses, cycle routes and hill walking routes ensures there really is something for everyone.
